What are some good books/resources to learn direct response marketing?

I am a 3rd year business student and have realized that I need to learn more about marketing than just the average college degree will give me. How can I learn direct marketing without having to take slow, menial college courses on it?

I have to do a sales presentation for one of my classes…what product should I use?

I have to pretend that I’m selling to a retailer, not the consumer. I can’t think of anything good. Looking for suggestions! Please?! Preferably something "new"…
