Distraction has long been a tool of the power elite to divert attention from their shady dealings, but I really think in today's society there is much less complicity and much more idiocy. 24 hour news channels have SO MUCH TIME to fill that they almost have to drone on about stupid stuff like what Sasha and Melia wore to school on their first day. Debbie-downer stories like genocide don't attract attention of viewers precisely because they are depressing. Ergo, viewers change the channel and CNN brings in less ad revenues. Therefore, they try to attract and hold your attention for as long as possible with saccharine stories designed to titillate rather than educate.

Although, if you want to see something scary, try comparing the pre-WWII Nazi party propaganda with Bush, Jr.'s. That will be an eye-opener for you.
