could you please specify some representative numbers for costs and conversion rates in both cases

Email is a much better option than direct mail in both cost and conversion. The problem is spam! You can only email people who give you permission to email them.

If your question is how direct mail compares with spam, well , direct mail would win that fight for a ligitimate business anyway.
