I’m thinking about pursuing a career as a market research analyst. Is this a good career?

I’m a college student majoring in marketing and I’m considering pursuing a career as a market research analyst. Is this an enjoyable career for those who have pursued it? How are the salaries and perks? What are the drawbacks? Also would you say a mathematical background is critical for this job? Thanks for any insight you can offer. =)

I have enjoyed my career in market research for the past 20 years. The positives: the wide variety of projects keeps it interesting; there are many opportunities to use your creativity; nearly all cities have opportunities; there are clear career paths. The money can be good, especially in a manager or sales function, though entry level salaries usually start low. If a high salary is important you are better off in finance.

A strong math ability is important but you don’t need to know calculus or higher math for most positions. A good number sense and ability to summarize data is all you need. Solid computer and writing skills are also valuable.
